Getting those winter garden jobs done

Winters can be harsh to our garden especially as the ice gets into the delicate plant structures and damages them completely. Maintaining your garden during those colder months can seem like a chore, however you will thank yourself once spring comes and you start using your garden to have friends and family over. It is not about pruning your flowerbed of watering your crops during the winter as the rain does a good job of that already. Winter month garden jobs are a little different.garden-leaf

As your lawn becomes damp from the rain and moist air, the grass becomes compacted from the weight making it difficult for the grass strands to breath adequately. A great job for helping your grass is to aerate your lawn. Simple grab a rake or garden fork and lightly separate your heavily watered grass, allowing it to breath. It is important to do this job with a light hand as heavy use of the rake or garden fork can cause damage to the lawn in a wet state and also cause a muddy mess.

While you have your rake in your hand, get those leave cleared up, keeping on top of the fallen leaves is important and they can stick to a decking or patio area once wet and can be difficult to remove. Collect all of your leaves and put into a composting bin which will be ready for your planting come spring time.

Give your patio or decking area a wash before and after winter, getting rid of all the dirt and grime the wind and rain can bring to it. Having a clean decking or patio area is so much more inviting for your guests.

These winter jobs are not great fun; however, they will reduce your workload massively once winter is over and you will be ready to have friends and family over for celebrations in the garden.
