Creating a small orchard in your back garden

We all dream of having a full-sized orchard at the bottom of the garden, with abundant fruits, berries, and nuts, but we don’t all have space.

This has not stopped some from using their initiative to create small orchards in their back garden using their space, with five trees being seen as the minimum to call it an orchard.

When we think of orchards, we think of apple trees, but you can also grow berrying shrubs, nuts and citrus fruits.  Many citrus fruits come in dwarf varieties and take up very little space.  Gooseberrys can be trained up against boundaries to maximise available space.

To ensure the maximum amount of fruit in the space you have available, steer away from the traditional wide spacing and incorporate the trees and shrubs into your exisiting garden.  Why not change your garden boundaries to fruiting shrubs or train plants to grow up walls or trellis.’
