The Dahlia is a popular tuber plant that presents beautiful large and dazzling blooms in midsummer through autumn. They are best planted in the late spring. They are related to the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum and zinnia. Dahlias come in a rainbow of colours and a variety of sizes. They are typically a tall growing flower (4-5ft) so are great for putting behind lower growing plants.
They are typically not very winter hardy so could be dug up prior to winter and replanted in early spring, to treat them as a perienneal or you can simply treat them as annuals and replant new ones every year. Dahlias love moist, moderate climates, well-drained soil and typically are not well suited to extremely hot environments.
If you are looking for a large, beautiful late bloomer that will brighten up and invigorate your garden, the Dahlia is a perfect choice. You will fall in love with these extravagant flowers!
